Last month, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) International Master Class came to Toronto to introduce the next generation of film industry professionals to the exciting world of production. The group visited SIM Digital followed by the Screen Industries Research and Training Centre (SIRT), finishing the program at Pixel Underground. This was the first time the Master Class was held in Toronto with students joining from around the world.
For their last session, the group spent an exciting afternoon at Pixel Underground where Marc Bachli, President and Colorist, evaluated Arri65 4K HDR footage. Marc was using DaVinci Resolve’s color correction tools as well as custom HDR LUTs built by SIM’s color engineers in Hollywood and NYC. The session was completely full with 45 attendees.
The participants were then divided into two groups to gain first-hand experience color correcting the footage shot on Saturday at the SIRT.
The groups were actively engaged in the sessions, gaining top-level knowledge from skilled industry professionals. The challenge however, was their desire to make the shots completely different, testing the possibilities of color. Academy award winning DP Guillermo Navarro, ASC who was participating in the color grade, noted that color should first be decided and executed on set, not in the color correcting stage.
“It was great to see everyone so excited by the work,” said DP Bill Bennett, ASC. “It was a unique opportunity for them to simulate an entire production and they were able to learn a lot in the final session at Pixel.”
ASC Master Class was sponsored by SIM Group and Pixel was proud to be involved in this year’s programming. The team looks forward to someday working with these talented future cinematographers.
